What We Do

Artist Submissions

To complement our mission of using urban nature to educate, inspire, and motivate people toward positive change, the Urban Ecology Center exhibits artwork in our Riverside Park and Menomonee Valley branches. All of the work displayed feature nature-related subjects, the natural sciences, natural products used as art, or the relationship of the urban environment to nature in their themes.

The Urban Ecology Center – Menomonee Valley is seeking artists interested in showing their work in our Valley Room gallery. The deadline to submit applications is Friday, January 13th, 2023.

Criteria for Exhibits:

To enhance the UEC’s educational mission, artwork must have one of the following as its theme: nature-related subjects, the natural sciences, natural products used as art or the relationship of the urban environment to nature. Work submitted in response to the call for artists must be consistent with what you will have available for the exhibition. As a neighborhood-based organization in a diverse neighborhood, we hope to host artists whose art reflects that diversity and resonates with our community. Artists with connections to the neighborhood(s) surrounding the Menomonee Valley Branch are highly encouraged to apply!

Details:

Selected artwork will be displayed in one of the quarterly shows:  June - August 2023,  September - November 2023, December 2023 - February 2024, March-May 2024. Art Opening receptions will always be on the second Friday evening (5 – 7pm) of the month beginning an exhibit.

Our exhibit spaces also serve as meeting rooms and classrooms that are used daily. The Menomonee Valley exhibit space has approximately 40 linear feet (approx. 6 ft. high) of the wall display area. Artists may exhibit alone or with others. Artists can choose to submit a proposal for a joint show. Artists are responsible for hanging their work using the Gallery System. When hanging artwork, help can be made available and an arts committee member will oversee it. The UEC provides the space, notifies its membership and community of the exhibit through a printed newsletter, email blasts and social media. Artwork may be available for purchase with a 10% sale price contribution to the UEC. The Center carries some insurance for these exhibits and artists are encouraged to carry their own as well.

Artists are also welcome to do performances, create a blog, and offer workshops, talks, presentations or classes relative to their work at the Center as part of their exhibit.
