Construction to Rebuild Bluff in Riverside Park

Construction to rebuild and stabilize a section of bluff will be starting Monday May 12th around 7:30 a.m. The construction is expected to continue until the end of the month. The area that is being worked on is just south of the Locust St. bridge where the bluff washed out by flooding in summer 2010.

This project is initiated, managed, and funded by the County and FEMA funds. The Urban Ecology Center did not initiate this project nor are we funding it. However, we want users of Riverside Park to be informed about the work being done.

Here is what to expect:

  • Marek Landscaping will be doing work using an excavator and ATV (to move big items pulling a sled). You can expect to see these machines at the bottom and top of the slope. They will be keeping a locked job box on site (but off the floodplain).
  • The trails will remain open during construction but trail users will need to use caution as they navigate the trails. Most heavily impacted will be the park entrance at Locust St. (noted by the * on the map), the trails leading down the bluff, and the east bank trail in that area.
  • The first two days they will clear the brush from the slope and plan to save the valuable trees. Most of what is being removed is invasive buckthorn.
  • By the end of next week, they will be moving large limestone blocks from the area by the boat launch (noted on the map) to the construction area. This will take about three days.
  • Gravel and soil will be hoisted over the Locust St. bridge or will be moved using a slide from the top, down to the bottom of the slope.
  • Construction hours will be approximately 7:30am-5:30pm each day
