During this hands-on cooking class, you'll use Indian ingredients, like cumin, sev, and fried chick peas, to turn regular dishes, like Mac' and Cheese, into meals bursting with new flavors! You'll learn how to use Indian cooking techniques and spices that add a twist to common foods, like pasta, corn, yogurt, and peas. In this class, you'll make a variety of snacks, such as a pea-dish with ginger and cumin, or a cold yogurt dish, and you'll make entrees like Indian Mac' and Cheese and Corn Poha. Also, bring some containers in case the dishes made in class have leftovers!
Can't wait until next week to start incorporating Indian recipes into your life? Susan has provided this tasty Masala Chai tea recipe - flavored with cinnamon, cardamom, and cloves – which is a great drink on a cold, blustery day. Here's how you can make it:
Ingredients:
- 1 ½ cup water
- 1-inch stick of cinnamon
- 8 cardamom pods
- 8 whole cloves
- 2/3 cup milk
- 6 teaspoons sugar (or to taste)
- 3 teaspoons any unperfumed, loose black tea
Put water in a saucepan. Add the cinnamon, cardamom, and cloves and bring to a boil. Cover, turn heat to low and simmer 10 minutes. Add the milk and sugar and bring to a simmer again. Throw in the tea, cover, and turn off the heat. After 2 minutes, strain the tea into two cups and enjoy!
