Research Internships for Credit

The Urban Ecology Center offers students opportunities to conduct research in our network of urban field sites, which includes the Milwaukee Rotary Centennial Arboretum (including Riverside Park), Washington Park and the Menomonee Valley.

The Urban Ecology Center will provide:

  • Access to the field sites mentioned above in addition to other public and private lands to the extent possible
  • Use of our research laboratory, equipment, computers, software and library
  • Support and guidance from the Manager of Research and Community Science, Research Assistant, GIS Specialist and members of our Community Science Advisory Council, which includes professors and professionals from 20 local Universities, government agencies and other organizations.
  • Support in finding necessary funds and living accommodations.
  • Support in obtaining college credits

All interns are expected to:

  • Have the support of a university professor or other professional.
  • Provide the Urban Ecology Center copies of data, papers and publications
  • Encourage public participation of field assistants in their research, as part of our Community Science Program.
  • Present their work to Urban Ecology Center members and the community at a public talk.
  • Incorporate their data into our GIS database, if applicable.

Areas of research include but are not limited to:

  • Bat Monitoring
  • Restoration Ecology
  • Exotic Species Control
  • Snake, Turtle and Other Herptile Population Dynamics
  • Urban Bird Migration
  • Vegetation Surveys
  • Small Mammal Survey and Population Work
  • Soil Properties and Pollutant Remediation
  • Human Impacts on Park Ecology
  • River Issues - Ecology
  • Green Building
  • Terrestrial Invertebrate Surveys
  • Spatial Analysis of Biological, Ecological and Physical Data

Positions are set up on a semester basis.
