Grace has always loved the outdoors; she grew up traveling out West with her family going camping and hiking each summer. Today, she has a family of her own in Milwaukee and keeps those traditions alive by continuing to camp and hike. She also stays active by biking, cross country skiing, taking neighborhood walks, and much more with the help of the Urban Ecology Center. “I love that the UEC helps me and our 3-year-old daughter stay connected to nature year-round, without needing to travel very far!”
Grace's daughter on the Milwaukee River
Grace first became familiar with the UEC while she was attending college in Milwaukee. In 2008, she borrowed a canoe and has since enjoyed borrowing other equipment and attending various UEC programs and events as a member. Her favorite event that she attended was the Urban Candlelight Hike at Three Bridges Park.
Grace and her family's favorite pieces of equipment to borrow are cross country skis and kayaks. “We borrowed cross country skis over the winter and we were able to ski in Brown Deer Park and at Lapham Peak. We have also borrowed kayaks from the UEC Riverside Park and Washington Park locations and paddled the Milwaukee River.” She said both experiences were wonderful.
The family has a lot to look forward to with the future of their membership, too. Grace mentioned that “when the Riverside location is open, we enjoy bringing our three-year-old to the building to visit the reptiles and play on the indoor slide!” She also excitedly looked ahead, saying, “I can't wait until our daughter is old enough to participate in the UEC's summer camps!”
