Be Part of Milwaukee History! Name the Park!

It’s not often you have the chance to name a 24-acre park in your city. But for the next week, you have exactly that chance!

The Urban Ecology Center is tremendously excited to be collaborating with Menomonee Valley Partners, the City of Milwaukee, the State of Wisconsin, and a number of other partners to open a new park the Menomonee Valley on Saturday, July 20.

The park has a little bit of everything. Serving as the new "outdoor classroom" for our Menomonee Valley branch, the public park will include 24 acres of native vegetation, re-created glacial topography offering great vistas of the city, wildlife habitat, access to the Menomonee River for canoeing and fishing, a mile extension of the Hank Aaron State Trail (connecting the Valley to Mitchell Park and the Domes), community gardens and public art.

All it needs is a name and we want your help!

Even Milwaukee historian John Gurda is excited about it: “Lots of people name their babies, but who gets to name an entire park?" he says. And the answer to that question could be…YOU!

The various partners involved for the project are currently seeking input for names for the new park. All names will be vetted by a naming committee consisting of a diverse group of stakeholders.

Parameters for naming the park include:

  • The name should relate to the site’s history, its future, or something that is uniquely Milwaukee.

  • The name cannot be too similar to any other City of Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, or Wisconsin State Park names.

Click here to submit your idea - but don’t wait too long. The deadline for submissions is March 22.  Click here to download a flyer you can post.

People who make suggestions will be entered into a drawing for the chance to win great prizes from wonderful places in and around the Menomonee Valley.

Start thinking, start submitting ideas, and join the conversation at #namethepark on Twitter and on Facebook!

Glenna grew up a mile up the river from the Riverside Park, so the Urban Ecology Center has always been important to her. Her studies and work have taken her all over the hemisphere, but her home has always been right here in Milwaukee. As Menomonee Valley Branch Manager, she is delighted to be part of the team that is working to connect a new community to the nature in their neighborhood. Her favorite things to do include hiking, exploring, cooking, singing, building forts, and trying to convince children that cockleburs are really baby porcupines!
