I kindly remind my colleagues that I’ve only been at the center for 10 months and this will be my first time working the event.
One colleague said she brings her kids to the event every year. She told me that the kids enjoy the walk even more than the adults! In her words, “Where else can I get my kids outside at night enjoying nature and listening to beautiful stories in the woods?” I’ve heard over and over that the kids find the walk magical. Once their walk is over kids and families head back to the Center to make a craft, play winter games, eat a lot of sugar (it’s the holidays, we have to!) and drink hot chocolate by the fire.
I have another colleague that said, “The poetry and walks are beautiful and people love it. The atmosphere inside the Center with hot drinks and music is really fun.” Hot drinks and music? Well, that’s something I wasn’t planning for! I’ve quickly come to realize that we’ll have dozens and dozens of homemade baked goods and hot chocolate waiting to be eaten and drunk back at the Center for folks to enjoy after their walk. How great is that? Oh, and there will be beautiful music too!
Now that I’ve had some input from staff and neighborhood friends that have attended the event year after year I have a general idea for what to plan for this year. Here is what you should anticipate:
Magic
The trails will be lit up with candles and you’ll experience the park like you’ve never experienced it before.
Reflection
The poetry and stories you will hear will offer a sense of peace. As you walk among the candlelit trails you won’t help but reflect.
Fun
The Center will be hopping with activity, music, laughter and treats.
Sugar
Did I mention treats?!
