Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food!

I have every intent to cook healthy, delicious, well-balanced meals for Josh (my husband) and Jude (my two-year old) but every time I venture off to the grocery store I end up with the same ingredients. I swear I make every effort to stop by the produce section and examine all of the colorful fruits and vegetables. I often admire those fearless shoppers who throw jalapenos, bok choy and kale in their carts. They seem brave. They seem to know what they are doing.

Well, this year I’ve made a promise to myself and my family to be more brave and adventurous with our food selections. I know myself well enough to know that I most likely won’t change my grocery shopping habits which is why I’m committed to joining a CSA (Community Supporting Agriculture) and becoming a member of a local farm by purchasing a share of farm fresh produce.

I’m going to start this journey by attending the Urban Ecology Center’s Local Farmer Open House on March 9th. I love the idea that I’ll be able to meet local farmers who grow sustainable foods and learn about their produce. I also love the idea of a box of farm fresh produce being available to me on a regular basis and forcing me to cook healthy and delicious meals. The idea of not knowing exactly what will be in my box each week is so fun and adventurous (remember I wanted to be more adventurous?!).

I want to set myself and family up for success with our new CSA share so I’ll plan on attending the CSA Basics workshop and learn about how to select a farm subscription that is right for us. I know there are many different options that make CSA’s affordable and I’ll be eager to learn about the special fund and rebate options.

I’ll also attend the Cooking from Your CSA Box workshop so I can get some inspiration with what to do with the produce each week. I’d love to incorporate the produce in my mom’s Italian recipes and I know she’d be so impressed!

So, are you ready to venture out and be brave like me? Cook a little healthier, serve more well-rounded, delicious meals? If the answer is yes, you’ll want to join me at the Local Farmer Open House on March 9th at Riverside Park. I even heard if you sign up for a CSA share that day you will get entered to win an amazing gift basket full of delicious local goodies. I most certainly don’t want to miss that! I’ll see you on March 9th!

Meghan’s love for the UEC started over 10 years ago when she was hired as a summer intern. From there her curiosity about museum science education led her to work at Discovery World and The Field Museum. Although Meghan and her husband fell in love with the Windy City (the deep dish pizza was to-die-for) they made the move back to WI and Meghan made her way back to the UEC. As Riverside Park’s Branch Manager, Meghan can’t imagine working anywhere else.
