Washington Park: a Hotspot for Winter Fun!

The season started off slowly, but it finally feels like winter in Washington Park. Between the solstice and the New Year we “enjoyed” above freezing temperatures and a complete lack of snow. But now that there’s a chill in the air and snow on the ground, Washington Park is a neighborhood hotspot for winter fun!

Every Saturday morning you can come to the Center to learn how to ski or snowshoe. On a near daily basis, the park is full of school groups, scout troops, families, and neighborhood kids doing the same. Our igloo is underway, and it’s even bigger and better than last year! And we’re keeping careful track of the ice thickness on the lagoon, eager to be able to open it up for skating.

We’re also celebrating all the fun this snowy season has to offer on Saturday, January 24th, at our annual winter festival – Winterfest!

We’ll kick the festival off at 10:30 am with our Winterfest for Afternoon Nappers program for toddlers, with guided hands-on nature activities aimed at kids ages 2-5 (this program is free, but pre-registration is required).

From noon – 4 pm we’ll have ice skating, sledding, and guided snowshoeing and skiing, weather permitting of course. Indoors we’ll have arts and crafts, animal feeding, and activities for the kids based on the science behind sledding, snow shelters, and energy use!

To help you stay warm we’ll be serving chili, baked potatoes, and homemade pie provided by Neighborhoods United for Washington Park and Community Pies, and sampling local coffee compliments of the Milwaukee Coffee Guild.

And to cap it off, for the last hour, we’re excited to welcome the Door County Sled Dogs for a meet and greet.

All of this is free and open to the public, and all equipment is provided. Come celebrate winter’s arrival with us!

Plan A for Erick’s life was to become a high school science teacher. But after graduating from Waukesha’s Carroll University in 2006 with degrees in Chemistry and Secondary Education, he found himself stumbling upon a much more intriguing Plan B. Joining the national program Lutheran Volunteer Corps, he spent the next two years placed as a full-time Environmental Educator at the Riverside Park Branch and was given the opportunity to stay on for three more years. In 2011, he began Plan C as Community Program Coordinator at the Washington Park Branch, focusing particularly on the Young Scientists Club program. He looks forward to finding out what plans D through Z will have in store.
