Increase your Impact: Company Matching Gifts

The easiest way to have a BIGGER impact in 2024? Ask your employer to match your 2023 gift! Matching gifts are a type of giving program set up by companies and corporations as an employee benefit. After an employee donates to a nonprofit, they can submit a matching gift request to their employer and the company will make an additional donation to that nonprofit.

Most employers will match gifts 1:1 meaning if you give $100, they company will give $100 as well.  But, some employers will double or even triple gifts!

The process for requesting and receiving matching gifts is quite easy.

The best part? You, as the donor/employee, are only involved in the first two steps!

The worst part? Most donors/employees don’t make it to step two…bummer! The Urban Ecology Center only received 13 matching gifts in 2023. Let’s change that!

Step 1: You make a donation! This is a pretty important step because there can be no matching gift without an initial gift to match! ;)

Step 2: You submit a matching gift request. This is the most crucial step in the process. Unfortunately, we cannot request matching gifts on your behalf, even when we know that gift is eligible. It’s a quick and easy process for you, though!

Step 3: Employer verifies donation. Companies will check with us to ensure a gift was indeed made to the UEC by one of their employees and that the gift is eligible for matching.

Step 4: The matching gift is sent. The last step, of course, is when we receive the matching gift from a company. Woo!

Here are some of the organizations that provide generous support to the UEC through their matching gift programs:

  • Baird
  • Johnson Controls
  • Caterpillar Inc.
  • Eaton
  • GE
  • IBM
  • Reader's Digest Association
  • Rockwell Automation
  • PNC
  • U.S. Bank

Don’t see your employer on the list? Let them know!

Another perk of matching gift programs? You are helping the Urban Ecology Center get noticed! Maybe your gift will not only lead to a matching gift from your employer but inspire the company to sponsor a UEC event, participate in a group volunteering activity or make an in kind donation of goods/service.

Thank you for taking one more step to double your impact! Because of you, we can connect more people in cities to nature and each other.

An American badger remains her favorite animal - having raised one from a cub. After making some difficult professional decisions, Michelle ended up in the nonprofit sector where she’s happily stayed for 8+ years.  Having started in January 2022, she still feels incredibly lucky to be part of the UEC team - a team who, like her, cares deeply about the environment and those, both human and not, that depend on it. When she’s not at the UEC, you can find her exploring the outdoors with her husband, two young children and their deaf English setter.
